The Big Picture

Just east of the Snoqualmie Pass mountains in the cozy hills of Walla Walla Washington the Garrison Middle school has become the spotlight for an ambitious youth project depicting a mural of a boy sitting on the edge of outer space, from planets painted in a kaleidoscope of colors to blossoming flowers.

The murals are ideas of Seattle based artist Adream de Valdivia, 28, who, has encouraged the youth to paint side by side with the artist. “ I’ve discovered the youth take ownership of the mural, through art they see imagination become reality”, said Adream.

Artist Adream is using Kickstarter to continue Washington State Murals: Youth become leaders to complete four new walls in Pasco depicting lush agriculture. Washington agriculture has become a portrait of the State’s culture. The murals are expected to stretch from Walla Walla to Seattle by 2014. When people see a hand painted mural it’s reminder of the power to create.

Its hardly seems possible, but there is less than 30 days to contribute to Washington State Murals Project: Youth become leaders on Kickstarter, this is the opportunity to transform your local walls in downtown into Public Art Murals.

My son Michael Stanton is a senior at Columbia High School in Burbank Washington. Michael has decided to team up with a company called WAKE UP who reaches out to kids by helping them “WAKE UP” and realize their potential as his senior project. WAKE UP has a music group that writes and produces hip hop/rap for the soul purpose of sending positivity through music to reach young kids in a positive and inspirational manor. They work this future monumental movement mostly through fundraising events. The WAKE UP CREW includes local young inspiring artists such as Alphy Nics, SL6, JW2 and other various artists have collaborated with my son for his senior project to help him put together what will be a HUGE BENEFIT CONCERT on behalf of a young lady who was stricken with Leukemia this last spring. Thanks to the watchful eye of her coach and the signs that it may not just be fatigue or the flu she was sent to Children's Hospital and has remained there ever since. Her name is ABLIGAIL HAMLIN from Finley High School. My son did not personally know Abigail but had heard about her story through a transfer student from Finley High School.
Michael has decided to make Abigail the FOCUS of his senior project with the help of WAKE UP to help raise money for her and her family through this difficult time in their lives. We went to her mother first to explain to her what we are planning to do for her wonderful daughter and she humbly agreed. Mike and I surprised Abigail with the news by driving up to Seattle to the Children's Hospital back in June for the first time. My son was the only one allowed to go in to actually meet her. He came out to me and said "Mom I don't know how to describe her, my only words that come to mind is that SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL SOUL". People have described Abigail as: caring, inspiration, giving, a happy person, and one who does not having a selfish bone in her body. Her mother has told me she also visits the other children in the other rooms in her ward at Children's Hospital to brighten their spirits, enlighten their day and give them HOPE. How inspiring! She has also told me that her daughter has said she would like some way to give back for what she has received. My son plans to help her accomplish this goal by also asking local businesses to help us raise money to give to our local Cancer Center. With hopes that this Movement Can spread across the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
Michael and WAKE UP are just starting this process and have currently had one car wash with the help of some DEDICATED Finley High School and Columbia High School students that have come together to help raise enough money to start the proceedings for the BENEFIT CONCERT. We will be having 2 more car washes on AUGUST 20th & SEPTEMBER 3rd, from 10-2PM, with the help of CARL’S JR on 395 & KENNEWICK Ave.
We will then be selling WAKE UP T-shirts (ABI HAMLIN EDITION) that will be the actual ticket into the BENEFIT CONCERT on OCTOBER 22nd at Columbia High School. Each shirt will be sold in some of the schools as a pre-order at a cost of $25.00. For those who want to help the cause can order T-Shirts by contacting Mike at (509)543-7006 or the WAKE UP Owner Isaac Butts at (509)366-8569. THANK YOU
I am very proud of my son. A kid who doesn't know this girl who wants to help her, who knows the rivalry history between Finley High and Columbia High (the fighting and the riot these two schools have had with each other) wants his peers to WAKE UP and come together on behalf of ABIGAIL HAMLIN. He knows that music can bring people together for the cause.
Thank you,
Sandra Stanton
