Today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day and to honor the millions of dogs suffering in puppy mills across the nation I participated in a protest outside of the Petland puppy store on Rd 68 in Pasco. If you have been following the story, they have had 4 sick dogs with Parvovirus since opening in July and only two survived. In the story that ran in the Herald today the owner claimed that they did not buy their puppies from brokers, but rather private breeders and USDA certified breeders (which by the way is a puppy mill) But then later this same day they contradicted themselves in the KEPR TV news story about our protest when they said they buy their dogs from a "middleman in Missouri"!!! (aka puppy mill broker) Oprah Winfrey did a special report on puppy mills a couple of months ago and discovered that virtually 100% of the dogs raised at commercial breeders in the Midwest were puppy mills. The truth is at www.awarenessday.org , are you ready for it? I am not saying don't ever buy a purebred puppy. I am saying you need to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder. You should go and see where the puppy was born and raised. Puppies from mills can carry horrible diseases and incurable birth defects, they can have severe behavioral problems due to lack of socialization, they are notoriously hard to potty train because they have been kept in cramped cages where they could not move away from their own messes. Encourage your friends and family to buy responsibly or adopt a pet. Many loveable small dogs and purebreds are waiting for homes at www.petfinder.com many of them were rescued from horrible breeders. Buy your supplies at stores that sponsor pets for adoption. Don't support commercially bred dogs. Puppy mills breed misery.
