A huge hail storm hit Friday at about 5:20 p.m. at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds. It was sunny and breezy until about 5:00, when giant grey clouds moved in. Dime sized hail started to rain down on the fairgrounds in sheets. There were plenty of places to shelter for the twenty minute storm. The building I sheltered in had a metal roof, and the hail battering it was so loud speech was impossible. About five solid minutes of hail was followed by about ten minutes of torrential downpour, after which the clouds blew over quickly. Within a few minutes, the entire fair was back up and operational, with only giant puddles and dripping roofs as evidence of our freak storm.
