Phoenix High School Harlem Shake

Press Release
February 26, 2013

Phoenix High School Students Produce Harlem Shake video as a fun way to promote their school’s planned expansion.

The Harlem Shake is a current internet dance meme that is spreading across the world. Phoenix Students thought it would be a fun way to showcase what their school is all about and get the attention of prospective students. Producing the video required students to step outside their comfort zone and try something completely different from the typical day at a traditional high school. They cooperated to turn the school into a set, plan costumes, choreograph and direct the 30 second dance video, and produce it. What looks like a few seconds of sheer chaos actually required careful planning, coordination, and patience to get right and it was an opportunity for students and their advisors to learn and have fun together.

Phoenix is a Small, project-based high school that is a part of the Kennewick School District. Students at Phoenix earn high school credit by proving that they have met Washington State Learning Requirements through self-chosen projects. Next year they are moving to a new campus across from the District Office on 4th street and they will be adding new staff and expanded opportunities for student enrollment. Students in 9th-12th grade who are interested in hands-on projects at small, family-like learning community can apply at Phoenix High School at 418 S. Vancouver Street, or call (509) 222-7400.
