Tri-City Americans co-owner Olaf Kolzig spent the bulk of his career as a goalie with the Washington Capitals.

However, he's been dealing with injuries over the last couple of years and when we caught up with him in July, we asked about his future plans.

In July, Kolzig said, "I think I'm leaning towards retirement, I haven't made any formal decision yet, but if you're asking me now, you know, that's the way I'm leaning."

Well, Wednesday morning, Kolzig made it official as he announced his retirement.

He ended up playing parts of 17 seasons in the NHL, racking up 303 wins, which ranks 21st in NHL history.

Kolzig spent last year with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and only played in 8 games before missing the rest of the year with an arm injury.

Kolzig issued a statement on Wednesday, saying in part, that he feels very privileged to have had the opportunity to play in the NHL and that he's thankful for everything the game has given him.

As for what's next, Kolzig told us in July that he's going to spend more time with his family and with the Ams, and keep an eye open for any front office jobs in the NHL.
