Mariners Don't Do Much At Trade Deadline

Mariners Don't Do Much At Trade Deadline

By Keith Leventhal

Friday was also a big day because it was baseball's trading deadline, and the Mariners were supposed to make a bunch of moves.

But, as the deadline passed, it turns out they only made 1...they sent relief pitcher Arthur Rhodes to the Florida Marlins.

In exchange, the M's picked up right handed pitcher Gaby Hernandez, who will be assigned to Seattle's Double A team.

Rhodes was 2-0 for the Mariners this year with an ERA of 2.53, but the team wanted to get younger, and the 22 year old Hernandez fits that bill.

The M's were reportedly close to trading Raul Ibanez to Toronto and Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees...but both of those deals fell through.

And trades for J.J. Putz, Adrian Beltre, and others never really got past the first steps.

There was one other trade that involved a former Mariner.

Ken Griffey Junior was traded from Cincinnati to the Chicago White Sox on Friday afternoon.

Griffey played in 100 games with the Reds this year, hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs.

The White Sox say they're planning to move Griffey back to center field, where he spent most of his time when he was with the Mariners.

And, in case you are curious, the White Sox don't come to Seattle again this year, however, the M's do play in Chicago from August 18th through the 20th.
