Mariners Lose Again, May Start Making Moves

By Keith Leventhal

I spent a good portion of my evening looking for a good stat to tell you about the Seattle Mariners.

Trust me, for a team that's 26 games under .500, that's quite a challenge.

And here's the best I could do...the M's have played their best baseball on Wednesdays this year, going 8-8 on hump day.

I know its not real exciting...but the M's could go over .500 on Wednesdays if they could beat the Rangers.

But it wasn't meant to be.

The Rangers get a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the 8th inning, and that ends up being the game-winning run.

Seattle loses their 2nd straight 1-run game as they fall to Texas 4-3.

The M's and Rangers will wrap up their series on Thursday night.

Wednesday's loss put the Mariners 27 games under .500 and, coincidentally, 27 games out of first place.

And if they're going to start rebuilding their roster, you can expect that to happen real soon.

Over the next 12 hours, the M's may pull off a couple of big trades.

And that process may already be underway.

The Miami Herald is reporting that the Florida Marlins will trade a mid-level minor league prospect to the Mariners in exchange for pitcher Arthur Rhodes.

Rhodes is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.53 in 34 games for the Mariners this year...but, he's also 38 years old, and the M's want to get younger.

This deal hasn't been finalized yet...and we'll let you know what happens with it on Thursday.

This may be just one of many moves the Mariners end up making as rumors are also swirling around Jarrod Washburn, Adrian Beltre, Raul Ibanez, J.J. Putz, and others.

And, just a reminder, the trading deadline is Thursday at 1 PM.

One Mariners player that probably isn't going anywhere is outfielder Ichiro Suzuki.

And last night, he hit a very big milestone.

On the very first pitch of the game, Ichiro blooped a single into short left for his 3000th career hit.

Ichiro would get 1 more hit later in the game to end the night with 3001 hits.

1723 of those hits have come in his 8 years in Seattle, while he picked up the other 1278 during his 9 years with the Orix Bluewave in Japan.

He becomes the youngest player in baseball history to get 3000 career hits, beating Ty Cobb by about 100 days.
