Connell Football Is Back In The State Quarterfinals
By Keith Leventhal
You could make the argument that one of the best high school football teams in the state this year is Connell.
The Eagles have played a top 2A team, a couple of top 1A teams, the defending 1A state champ, and a good team from Idaho. Even with that brutal schedule, Connell has come through it without a blemish. The Eagles are a perfect 11-0 and back in the state quarterfinals for the 3rd time in the last 4 years. In fact, in 2006 and 2007, they made it all the way to the state championship game. Last year, Connell was knocked out in the first round of the state tournament. And the team says that loss has kept them motivated all year. Connell head coach Wayne Riner says, "We used the motivation last January, right after Christmas, we went to work, in the mornings, we were doing Plyometrics, explosion drills, these kids went to work and so what's fun about this season is seeing their hard work pay off cause one of the things we preach at Connell, that hard work pays off and it has paid off for us this year." Connell senior WR/FS Shane Didier adds, "Last year we were pretty disappointed after our season, so we just got in the weight room and came back to be, you know, be a pretty dominant team." If the Eagles are going to keep their perfect record intact, they'll have to beat one of their league rivals. Connell will take on River View in the state quarterfinals. The Eagles crushed the Panthers when these two teams played back in September. This time, they'll play at Lampson Stadium. That game starts Saturday afternoon at 4:00. And we'll talk about the River View football team Friday at 6:00 PM. |
