High School Football and Girls Soccer Recap 11-4-09
By Keith Leventhal
This is the final week of the regular season for a number of our area's high school teams.
In the Southeast 2B league, 3 teams could end up in playing a tiebreaker for the league's 2 playoff spots. So, because of that, some schedules were changed this week...and that meant there were a pair of games on Wednesday night. DeSales wrapped up their regular season against Liberty Christian. And the Irish pick up the 58-14 win. Also, Waitsburg-Prescott beat Dayton 42-13. So DeSales, Waitsburg, and Asotin all end up in a tie for 1st...and that means they'll play a 3-way playoff on Tuesday to decide which 2 teams will go to state. At the same time that the football regular season is winding down, the girls soccer postseason is just heating up. The East side of the state gets 2 spots in the 3A state tournament. At the start of the day, there were 4 teams still fighting for those spots...and one of them was Hanford. The Falcons had to take a trip up north to take on Mt. Spokane in a state qualifying game. It was scoreless at the half...but then, the Wildcats got going and they end up with the 3-0 win. So, Hanford's season comes to an end with a record of 7-10. On the other side of the bracket, West Valley hosted North Central. And the Rams get the 5-0 win. So, in the first round of state, West Valley will play at Mt. Spokane. Our 4A soccer teams are still one game away from the state tournament. Tuesday night, there were a pair of seeding games. Southridge got a shootout win over Richland and Pasco scored twice in the final 2 minutes to beat Moses Lake. Those games, along with Wednesday night's GSL games, mean the regional match-ups are now set. Kamiakin and Southridge will both be at home. The Braves will play Moses Lake while the Suns host University. Richland has to play at Lewis and Clark. And Pasco gets to play at the top seed from the GSL, the Mead Panthers. All 4 games are winner to state, loser out...and all 4 of them will be on Saturday. |
