Sunnyside's BJ Miller Lives On Through Organ Donation
By Keith Leventhal
There was also a very special moment during Sunday's Seahawks game.
BJ Miller was a star athlete in Sunnyside...but exactly 1 year ago, his life was taken in a tragic car accident. Miller was remembered by his family and friends during halftime of Sunday's game between his 2 favorite teams. But, even though Miller passed away a year ago, his legacy still lives on. His family decided to donate his organs, and through that donation, 5 people are now living better lives. His mother says that the decision to donate wasn't easy, but she knew that it would allow her son to keep helping others. BJ's mother, Daria Miller, says, "For us as parents, and me as a mom, to know that we were able to turn this tragedy into something positive by donating his organs has, yes, has given us some peace. It was a decision that came knowing that we weren't going to have our son with us, but that we were able to do something positive for him and for any parent or any one person, you know, to know that, you know, when our life ends, our life is over, but there's so much that we can still give and I would say please, you know, sign up and donate." Daria also said that they've been in touch with one of the organ recipients. She's a single woman in her 30's who couldn't have kids because of a kidney disease. But, thanks to BJ, she hopes to start a family within the next year. |
