Eagles Fall in a Heartbreaker
TACOMA – The rematch of last year’s 1A state final game unquestionably lived up to everyone’s expectations. Unlike last year’s 28-7 Connell win, this year was a down to the wire thriller that saw Cascade Christian coming out on top.
The Cougars have gone to the title game the past three years, and they finally got over the hump with their 35-28 win on Saturday. The game was full of clutch performances, high pressure situations, and momentum shifts every five minutes.
The first half ended in a tie 14-14 after Matt Hadley scored an Eagles touchdown with a few minutes to go in the quarter.
The Eagles came out of halftime deciding to go for an onside kick to start the half. The Eagles recovered the kick, and a few plays later Matt Hadley was in the Wildcat formation and took it in for the touchdown.
Although, the Eagles had captured all the momentum to start the second half, it couldn’t phase the Cougars. Cascade Christian proceeded to go on a 21-7 scoring run, giving them the lead 35-28.
Connell responded with a run by James Coulson that tied the game up at 35 in the fourth quarter.
With little over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Cascade Christian came up with a big run by Tyler Walrath that put the Cougars ahead 42-35.
The Eagles got the ball back with time to work the two minute drill. But an incomplete pass on fourth down sealed Connell’s fate and gave the win to Cascade Christian 42-35.
The Eagles have made it to the championship game four times in the last five years, with their lone championship win coming in 2009.
