Tough Weekend For Our College Football Teams
By Keith Leventhal
The University of Washington football team came into Saturday's game with Stanford with some high hopes.
The Huskies were actually favored to beat the Cardinal and they were coming off of a bye week. But, its amazing how quick things went from optimistic to just plain bad. The Huskies did put up a good fight in the game...but they just didn't have enough to beat the Cardinal, as UW fell to Stanford 35-28. While that dropped Washington to 0-4 this year, it wasn't even the worst news from the game. During the 2nd quarter, quarterback Jake Locker was blocking for his running back...and he ended up breaking his thumb. Locker had surgery to repair the fracture on Monday, and he's expected to be out for 6 to 8 weeks, possibly ending his season. Redshirt freshman Ronnie Fouch replaced Locker on Saturday and threw for 186 yards and a touchdown. Fouch will remain the starter as long as Locker is out. And while we're talking about struggling college football teams, we can't forget about Washington State. The Cougs suffered another crushing defeat on Saturday, falling to Oregon 63-14. If you take out Washington State's win over 1-AA Portland State, the Cougs are 0-4 this year, and have lost those games by an average score of 53-12. Saturday's loss was the 2nd time they've allowed more than 60 points this season, and the 14 points they scored was their 2nd highest total this year. This week, the Cougs head down to California. They'll play another struggling team when they take on UCLA on Saturday night. And we end the college portion of the show with a look at the new top 25 poll. There were all sorts of changes at the top of the poll this week...Oklahoma is the new number 1 team...Alabama jumps up from 8th to 2nd...and LSU moves up 2 spots to 3rd. Former number 1 USC drops down to 9th after losing to Oregon State. Boise State was off on Saturday, but they still moved up 2 spots to 17th. And Oregon is back in the top 25 this week...they landed at number 23. |
