Cougs Down To QB #3

Cougs Down To QB #3

By Keith Leventhal

Its been both a great and a horrible week for the Washington State football team.

The Cougs did win their first game of the year on Saturday as they beat Portland State 48-9.

But, in the process, they lost their top 2 quarterbacks with very similar injuries.

Kevin Lopina was knocked out of the game early with what the team called a deep shoulder bruise...but after further testing, it turned out to be a fractured vertabrae in his back that will keep him out for 2 to 6 weeks.

Then, Gary Rogers came into the game.

After his injury, he was taken off the field in an ambulance...and his season is done after suffering a broken bone in his neck.

Cougs head coach Paul Wulff says these injuries are taking a toll on the team.

Coach Wulff says, "We're not real deep, so when we get a guy hurt here and there, we seem to suffer and so we need to continue to have young guys step up when they replace veteran players and then we need our veteran players to be healthy and they need to make the plays when they're there."

With their top 2 quarterbacks out, that means redshirt freshman Marshall Lobbestael will get the start on Saturday, with a walk-on and a true freshman backing him up.

Saturday's game against Oregon gets started at 3:15 PM in Pullman.
