Huskies Still Hurting From Controversial Call

Huskies Still Hurting From Controversial Call

By Keith Leventhal

If you are a University of Washington fan...you might still be a little upset with the way Saturday's game turned out.

In case you missed it, let me set the stage for you.

washington trailed BYU 28-21 in the final minutes of the game.

Jake Locker led the Huskies downfield...and with 8 seconds to go, he took the game into his own hands.

He made a great run to get into the endzone and score...but, he throws the ball in the air...and the refs call an unsportsmanlike penalty.

That pushed the extra point back to the 25 yard line...and BYU blocked the kick and held on to win 28-27.

A lot of people say that penalty shouldn't have been called.

But, here's what the NCAA rulebook says.

According to rule 9, section 2, article 1, part 2, "After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot. This prohibits: c) throwing the ball high into the air".

So, technically, the officials had to throw the flag after Locker heaved the ball into the air.

But, here's the best part of this whole story.

The field judge, who happens to throw the first flag as he walks through this shot...his name is Mike McCabe.
