4A/3A Regional Track Meet Gets Underway

By Keith Leventhal

Our local 4A and 3A track stars caught a lucky break this year.

The district, regional, and state meets are all within 10 miles of each other...and they're all taking place in the Tri-Cities.

Last week, it was the district round.

And on Friday, it was time for the regional meet over in Richland...and it was a beautiful day out there.

We start with the field events...these are all finals...the 3A girls javelin is first...Richelle Stewart from Kamiakin...this is a fantastic throw...133 feet, 5 inches...and that is the best throw of the day...she wins the event.

4A girls long jump is next...Richland's Lindsay Roberts on one of her final attempts...and its a good one...17 feet, 4 and a half inches...that's good enough for 2nd place.

Let's move to the 3A girls high jump...Allyssa Thompson from Kamiakin was one of 3 to clear 5'4"...and she wins the tiebreaker of least attempts.

The 3A boys pole vault was historic for one of the competitors...Southridge's Cameron Fancher trying to clear 13 feet, 9 and a half inches...he does...that's a new school record.

And finally, one final on the track...the 3A girls 3200...Hanford's Erin Hegarty is all alone at the finish...she wins it in a big way...10 seconds ahead of 2nd place.

The meet will continue on Saturday at Fran Rish Stadium...all the action starts at 10:30 AM.
