Trial set for Pendleton man accused of slaying

BEND, Ore. (AP) — A trial date has been scheduled for a Pendleton man accused of killing horse breeder Carolyn Burdick this summer.

Bend station KTVZ reports that a Deschutes County judge set a July 8, 2014, trial date for Joshua Jokinen.

The 30-year-old man was on supervision for an earlier criminal offense when police say he killed the 78-year-old woman by hitting her in the head with the back of a shovel.

The death occurred in a rural area east of Sisters where horse farms are common.
