TRI-CITIES - Summer time is the prime time for real estate, and in the Tri-Cities sales are steady and homes are selling for more. A few years ago, housing sales sky-rocketed with the tax credit for first-time home buyers. KEPR uncovered that 2012 could be the best year since '09 for the Tri-Cities.

Jeff Campbell and his family of seven have lived in their Pasco home since 2005, but now they're ready to sell.

“We've heard around that things are picking up and that there are several homes of this size that have sold in the area,” said Campbell. “So that encouraged us to put it on for the summer a little quicker than we were originally planning.”

Jeff listed his home as for sale by owner, hoping to save on a realtor's commission.

“I think the key for us is we just got to find the right person for this type of home,” added Campbell.

Jeff could have more success than he would have in the past. KEPR looked at the trends so far this year and found they're similar to last year with about 1400 homes sold so far. Those numbers could go higher since an additional 200 homes are under contract in the Tri-Cities.

It's an important change coming off of a banner year back in 2009 when the new home buyer credit was available.

“Yeah, I think we're on track for probably the best year we've had since those inflated numbers of 2009-2010,” said Jeff Thompson of Windermere real Estate. “There are buyers out there looking to buy.”

Sellers are reaping the benefits as well. Homes are selling for about $4,000 more on average.

“It's nice to see that little increase versus the shoot-up, because when you do the shoot up you typically have the fall down,” added Thompson.

Jeff Campbell is hoping to find the right buyer so he can make his own purchase.

“It's going to be hard to leave it a little bit, we have some boys though who think they need more space,” said Campbell.

Realtors say they expect sales to stay strong through the summer and early fall. Last year, the month of July and August combined to sell more than 500 homes here in the Tri-Cities.
