Several arrested for Kennewick car prowls

KENNEWICK POLICE NEWS RELEASE -- We investigated a series of car prowls over the weekend and arrested several juveniles for car prowl and trafficking stolen property.
Friday March 15th: Columbia Center Mall Parking lot. Victim reported that the suspect punched the lock on her car door, entered the vehicle and stole and urn that contained her mother's ashes.
2525 W Grand Ronde. Victim reported that the suspect entered his unlocked vehicle and stole a Motorola bluetooth, cell phone charger, a Garmin GPS and an Ignition Interlock device.
Area of 3rd & Benton: At approximately 3:30 am, the victim at 119 W 3rd heard suspicious noise outside so he activated his car alarm to scare them off. The next morning he found that his car had been broke into and so had his neighbors. The suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and took his cell phone bluetooth device. His neighbor at 115 W 3rd also had an unlocked car that the suspect(s) entered and attempted to remove the car stereo and damaged the dash in the process. It appears that the suspect was scared off by the car alarm activation because the suspect left behind a pair of shoes and a long board. A third vehicle that was left unlocked was also entered and a cell phone charger and baseball gear was taken. The 4th vehicle that was entered was parked at 2nd and Benton, also unlocked. This time the thief(s) made off with a handgun that was left under the seat. In addition, his Garmin GPS and a Ham Radio were taken.
Sunday March 17th: A second vehicle was broken into at the Columbia Center Mall parking lot so that the thief could steal an IPad that was left in plain view. The window was smashed to gain entry.
Tips for car owners: always lock your car when you leave it and keep valuables out of sight. Most thieves look for unlocked cars that are easy targets but if something looks valuable, they will break in to it. In addition, firearms should never be left unattended at night in a vehicle.
Saturday March 16th: The CAT Team assisted patrol officers with recovering stolen property from a car prowl. The case developed the names of 6 juveniles, all age 14. Three were taken into custody and three are still at large. The investigation continues and it is not known at this time if these juveniles are in anyway related to the rash of car prowls reported over the weekend.
