The fair is a draw for many in town - including those up to no good.
"I would definitely be scared - I would want to protect my son,” said fairgoer Janet Ferguson.
It's why the Benton-Franklin Fair and Rodeo continues to up its security game -- including private security and Kennewick Police.
"We just want to keep everyone safe and happy,” said Fair Manager Lori Lancaster.
The fair can be a lure for gang members -- putting those who don't normally hang out together -- suddenly on the same turf. It's why the Benton County Sheriff's Gang Enforcement Team roams the ground, too.
“Don't come out here and bring your gang colors,” added Lancaster.
Lieutenant Joe Lusignan says they're watching for intimidation between gang members.
Sergeant Ken Lattin says there have been a handful of arrests so far.
They've all been for people wanted on warrants -- who the cops happened to spot at the fair.
“If you're a person wanted by law enforcement and you try to come to the fair, you're not going to make it in - and you're going to go where you're supposed to,” added Lancaster.
The sign outside the fairgrounds warns those who want to make trouble.
"This is about families and people having a good time and being safe"
Which helps fairgoers – like Janet, rest easily.
"Love the fact their presence is here and that they truly view this as an important event to keep safe,” said Ferguson.
As law enforcement monitors the big crowds - they keep our community's kids and families that much safer.
