But when it comes to the Hanford layoffs, all too often unemployed workers are too embarrassed to get help.
Work Source tells Action News only 250 people have taken advantage of a retraining program for Hanford's laid-off workers. That's out of more than 5,000 layoffs.
People say you got to swallow your pride in order to get back on track.
"The thing that was foremost in my mind was -- I need to become more marketable to an ever-changing workforce. So -- you know -- you really need to get a degree. And, you know -- that's what I was saying -- the people that are going to encounter this problem -- I think it's a great thing to do," said Retraining Recipient John Fowler.
The Hanford grant program is accepting applications on a rolling basis.
