Red Mountain interchange project still on hold

BENTON CITY, Wash. -- A big road project out at Red Mountain is like eating an elephant, one bite at a time. Talk of a new interchange has gone on for years. Now the state is seeking another $3 million.

That would come from a federal grant, and it would help put a roundabout at the Benton City exit off I-82 that accesses wineries on Red Mountain. The DOT has spent nearly $1 million so far and says the design phase is almost done. Now it's just a matter of paying for construction.

"If we do get approval to get that TIGER grant, it will probably be late next year, 2015 or early part of 2016, before we see construction on that project," said WSDOT project engineer Moe Davari.

The state will know if it got the grant by the summer.
