HERMISTON, Ore. -- The Hermiston Fire District has a new chief. Scott Stanton was sworn in Wednesday.

Chief Stanton will be only the fifth paid fire chief in the 100-year history of the Hermiston Fire Department. He has served 27 years in fire service. 19 of those years were in Hermiston, and he has been assistant chief for the past six years.

"Just excited about where we're headed," said Stanton. "You know, the last six years, Chief Hart and I really have strived to further our customer service for the community, our effectiveness of providing fire suppression and emergency medical services, and I'm just real excited about where we're headed in the future."

Chief Stanton's wife and daughters surprised him with a pinning ceremony. Both the new chief and old chief were brought to tears with the special service.
