Murder charge dismissed in Umatilla County shooting

PENDLETON, Ore. -- A murder charge has been dismissed against an Irrigon man accused of shooting and killing another man near Hermiston earlier this month.

On Tuesday, a Umatilla County grand jury found there was not enough evidence to indict Timothy Kelly for murder in the death of Daniel Dechand.

According to Umatilla County District Attorney Daniel Primus, investigators were convinced that Kelly shot and killed Dechand. However, Primus says there was also substantial evidence that Kelly shot in self-defense as Dechand was trying to rob him.

The district attorney's full report is available here.
