TRI-CITIES - It's a shocking thought. Over a thousand people driving without insurance. Action News discovered more drivers are getting ticketed for the very thing.

Between January and August of the past three years, the upward trend is steady. Marking a slight dip last year.

Many times, troopers will give a verbal warning before slapping down a fine. WSP advises drivers to get policies that cover those uninsured or underinsured motorists, too.

"I believe that they should raise the penalties for driving with no insurance because people who are required to pay their insurance and do pay their insurance end up paying for all the accidents these people cause," said local driver Keith Hanneman.

A ticket for driving without insurance is more than $400.
