Man killed after Hermiston holdup identified

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) — Authorities have identified a man shot by police after a bank robbery in Hermiston.

Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus says the 55-year-old man, Gregory Melvin Shafer, lived in the Hermiston area.

The East Oregonian reports that Shafer was suspected of robbing Community Bank on Monday. Afterward, officers tracked him to a liquor store.

Primus says Shafer pointed what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun at officers. The district attorney declined to be more specific, saying only that "it wasn't a toy."

Primus says he expects a grand jury review of the shooting next week.
