Man dead in Umatilla County officer-involved shooting
UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore. -- Umatilla County officials say a man was killed Monday morning in an officer-involved shooting near Athena.

Umatilla County District Attorney Daniel Primus says an Athena police officer shot 55-year-old Tere David King just before 7:30 a.m. near Pamburn Road south of Oregon Route 11.

Authorities say King led law enforcement on a high-speed chase Saturday before escaping. He was considered armed and dangerous, and officers continued to look for him through the weekend.

Then, on Monday, Sgt. Erik Palmer of the Athena Police Department found King in his vehicle. Officials say King drove straight at Palmer until he shot out the vehicle's tires. Then, according to prosecutors, King left the vehicle carrying a gun, and Palmer shot him once.

Oregon State Police, the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office, the Pendleton Police Department, and Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla police are among the law enforcement agencies investigating the case.

Palmer has been placed on paid leave while the investigation into the shooting continues.
