KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Hundreds gathered at St. Joseph's in Kennewick Monday to celebrate the life of the late Rev. Monsignor Desmond Patrick Dillon. it was standing room only for his funeral Mass.

The senior priest was 99 years old and a founding priest of the Diocese of Yakima. He was ordained in 1941 and served in several parishes around Seattle, Prosser, Sunnyside, and Toppenish.

The monsignor fell ill earlier this month. The Bishop of Yakima along with over 40 priests were on hand.

"He promoted it a lot and kept people, plus he'd been here a long time, so there was the wisdom of seeing him there, and he just made people feel good and encouraged them and inspired people to keep going in their own faith," said the Rev. Richard Sedlacek, pastor at St. Joseph's.

Donations in the monsignor's memory may be made to the Diocese of Yakima Priest Retirement and Health Fund.
