SEATTLE -- Two soldiers assigned to separate Stryker Brigade Combat Teams based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord were killed Saturday in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Spc. Brittany B. Gordon and Sgt. Robert J. Billings died when their units were hit by improvised explosive devices.

Gordon, 24, was from St. Petersburg, Florida and was part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team's 572 Military Intelligence Company.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that Gordon was the daughter of the St. Petersburg assistant police chief.

"I know that Chief Gordon was extremely proud of Brittany and all that she accomplished in her life," police Chief Chuck Harmon told the paper. "Her life of service and especially service to her country stand as a testament to the type of person she was."

Billings, 30, was a member of the 3rd Stryker Brigade. He was from Clarksville, Va.

He joined the Army in 2006 and served with the 4th Stryker Brigade in Iraq in 2009 and 2010 before being assigned to the 3rd Stryker Brigade.
