Kennewick library looking more like high-tech classroom
MID-COLUMBIA LIBRARIES NEWS RELEASE – Connecting to the online world just got easier at Mid-Columbia Libraries’ Kennewick Branch. The library’s computers and technology have been consolidated into one area, the new Shirley Stroh Technology Center near the entrance to the branch.
The center boasts 51 computers; a classroom with a projector, instructor station, and student stations; a new copy and print center; comfortable seating/waiting area; four 15-minute quick-access internet stations; and new equipment, furnishings, and software throughout. The technology center also has a dedicated customer service station to assist computer users.
The library’s internet capacity has increased in more ways than one. First, the design of the technology center has allowed for the number of public internet computers to increase from 40 to 51. Second, consolidating technology equipment to one area frees up space throughout the library for mobile and wireless users, essentially doubling the library’s capacity for individuals connecting to the internet.
Project partners included ARES Corporation as the architect/engineering firm, along with general contractor MP Construction, Inc. and design firm archiTEMP, pllc. The primary funding source for the $220,000 technology center remodel is the Shirley Stroh Estate gift to Mid-Columbia Libraries. The library received the first distribution of the estate gift in December, 2000. Ms. Stroh’s gift consisted of over $250,000 in cash, property, etc. and was designated for the Kennewick (1620 S. Union) and Pasco (1320 W. Hopkins) Branches. Mid-Columbia Libraries receives interest and ongoing income from investments of the Stroh gift. Most recently, the library used approximately $125,000 in Stroh funds toward equipment and furnishings for the Pasco Branch remodel (completed in March, 2009).
