Historic highway opens to bicycles
It's still snow going out there in the mountains

MCKENZIE BRIDGE, Ore. - Bikers and hikers have the historic McKenzie Pass Highway 242 to themselves for the moment.

An Oregon Department of Transportation snow blower cleared one lane of the highway, enough for pedestrians and bicycles.

The highway will remain closed to motor vehicle traffic until all the snow is melted off the road. Last year, the highway opened on June 19.

ODOT urges people to seize the opportunity to ride or walk the scenic route for the next few weeks.

Cyclists should remember to obey the normal rules of the road when they travel the highway.

Visitors also need to be aware that there will also be continuing maintenance activity on the highway.

Hwy 242 closes every winter and reopens in spring due to snow. The spring opening to bicyclists has become an Oregon cycling tradition.
