WALLA WALLA - Officials are taking big steps to protect our local salmon population. Almost two million dollars was given to Walla Walla and Columbia counties.

The money will go toward the Snake River Salmon Recovery Board. The group plans to build screens for irrigation areas, so the fish don't get stuck in the pumps. There will also be habitat restoration.

The grant also benefits Garfield, Asotin and Whitman counties.
