TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- The Tri-Cities bumpy roads could lead to more cash in your wallet.

It's inevitable. Against a wave of gravel and potholes, your car damaged.

"There was a big hole and tear where (the pothole) hit... shredding the tire" says Cathy Sanchez.

A pothole left Sanchez with a mangled tire, monstrous bill, and downright miserable day.

"It makes me mad because we pay so much taxpayer money to go into the roads," she says.

Sanchez's story is the norm rather than the exception, but KEPR learned some folks are taking issues into their own hands.

They filed a damage claim against their town and won. Here in the Tri-Cities more than $2,000 in damages were awarded to folks last year.

Damage from potholes is one thing, but go through a construction site, and damage to your car could get even worse.

So how do you get your money back? All you have to do is visit the clerk's office to fill out a form with information on the damage. Ultimately, city workers will decide if you have a case, but if your car really is damaged, you could have some cash coming your way.

All claims are investigated by an insurance company, as well as the city's legal department.
