Funeral home contracts = savings for Franklin County's taxpayers
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Wash. -- KEPR learned a growing workload for the Franklin County coroner didn't translate to more money being spent.

For a year now, Franklin County's coroner has contracted with a local funeral home to take bodies to the morgue.

Under the contract, the services are totally free.

It's a stark contrast to the old system, where different funeral homes would be assigned to cases on a weekly basis--- and would then charge the coroner a fee.

By contracting with just one business, Franklin County has saved more than $3,000 in reduced costs.

The savings will go back into the Franklin County's general fund.

It comes as the coroner's workload surged by 30 additional cases last year.
