Western Benton County wildfire seen around Tri-Cities

BENTON COUNTY -- It was anything but a holiday for a number of our local firefighters when the word went out this afternoon that there was a natural cover fire taking off in rural Benton County.

They stationed themselves at the intersection of Dennis Road and Webber Canyon Road, west of Badger Mountain near Benton City. Smoke was visible from all around the Tri-Cities.

Firefighters told us it was all-hands-on-deck. Multiple units responded. Firefighters even had to monitor one house at the base of the hill. Officials tell us careful strategy was key.

"Right now, we're just trying to protect any homes that are in the way. Trying to catch the fire at the flanks, trying to keep it from jumping the canal road and other thank that, you know, just working with all the other units that are here," said Richland Firefighter Adam Hargrove.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Crews were backburning near Candy Mountain into the evening. Crews will remain overnight to mop up any hot spots.
