Fatal motorcycle crash update
KENNEWICK-- Police are continuing to put together what happened last week.
Officer Stan Howard says, "it appears right now that the motorcycle rider ran a stop light and hit the front side passing truck."
Officer Howard was one of the first responders on the scene. A young motorcyclist is dead after a tragic accident.
All that remains on Olympia and 45Th is a memorial. Police tell me it was a combination of factors that caused the collision.
Howard says, "there are some that don't have the training, or riding are riding above their abilities. They're not following the rules of the road. It just makes it that much more dangerous for them and the general motoring public."
None of the neighbors in this area wanted to talk to me on camera, but they say they're not surprised something like this happened. They tell me motorcyclists often speed down this road putting themselves and others at risk.
Officer Howard tells KEPR, "when I see that I just think, here this is going to be our next accident."
In light of the accident, KEPR Action News looked into the problem of motorcycle crashes. I learned there are roughly 70 fatal motor cycle accidents a year in Washington. Of which more than half of them are caused by speeding.
Howard says, "they're not uncommon. Usually they are vehicles pulling out of driveways over look motorcyclists coming down the road, they don't see. They push them off the road and they fall."
The cause of this week's crash is still being investigated. Officials are running tests to see if the motorcyclist was on drugs or alcohol and how fast he was traveling at the time of the accident.
Howard says, "just got to put everything together, just gotta get all the reports from all the officers that are there, just put it into something that is readable."
It will take about two weeks to get the official report, until then officer Howard has a message.
He says, "ride like everyone is out to run you over and be an aggressive defensive rider."
