Family is safe after fire damages home
YAKIMA FIRE DEPT. NEWS RELEASE-- At approximately 7 PM on September 2, 2014 the Yakima Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire on the 1100 block of Roosevelt. Crews arrived to find the detached garage/apartment was heavily involved in fire and the fire was spreading to the main residence attic and interior. The fire crews worked quickly to knock down the main area of fire from the exterior then moved to the inside of the main residence. It was determined all occupants were out of the building. Several cats did not make it out, but some kittens were brought out safely. Crews remained on scene for several hours to make sure there were no hidden fires in the attic that may start up again in the strong winds.

The occupants were notified of the fire when they saw a red glow through the window. It was undetermined if they had working smoke detectors in the home. Three adult occupants were displaced and Red Cross of Yakima worked with them to find a place for the evening.

The cause is being investigated at this time.

A large portion of the roof of the main building was destroyed. The interior of the main building was also heavily damaged. The occupants belongings were mostly destroyed.

Initial estimate of the dollar loss is $150,000.
