Eastern State mental patient prefers prison

WALLA WALLA, Wash. (AP) — A man who was committed to Eastern State Hospital was able to change an insanity plea to get out of the mental hospital because he didn't want to be forced to take medications indefinitely.

The 22-year-old, Luis A. Ballesteros, was committed in 2011 after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to charges from an assault in Touchet.

The Union-Bulletin reports an appeals court ruling allowed him to change his plea Wednesday in Walla Walla. He pleaded guilty to assault and burglary charges and now faces about three years in prison with credit for 34 months he's been detained.
