Duo arrested in connection to car thefts
UMATILLA COUNTY SHERIFF'S NEWS RELEASE -- On Monday, February 20, 2012, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office learned that Pendleton Police Department had arrested Cody Lee DEAN (20 yoa) Jeffery Allen SMITH (20 yoa) both of Hermiston.

DEAN and SMITH have been persons of interest related to a number of stolen vehicles from Hermiston and the surrounding area. The vehicles were stolen and would later be found burned. Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services have been assisting in the investigation.

Umatilla County Sheriff’s Detectives interviewed SMITH and DEAN and were able to gather evidence to charge the duo with 12 counts of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, and other related crimes.

“This case has been an ongoing investigation for the past few months,” Undersheriff Rowan said. “We had some circumstantial evidence against SMITH and DEAN, but not quite enough to arrest them on the case until more evidence came to light. We will continue to work with the District Attorney’s Office and continue our investigation.”

The investigation is still ongoing.
