It's a frightening feeling.

You leave town for the weekend and come back - only to find someone someone broke into your home or car.

Simple prevention could keep your family from crime this Labor Day.

Officials say holiday weekends are prime time for burglaries and car prowls.

The best prevention? Let neighbors know you're out of town - SO they can watch out for suspicious activity.

It's also best to turn outdoor lights on a timer and have someone pick up your newspaper.

"Generally, we find on a three-day weekend, we have an increase in that kind of crime, uh, the burglars know people are out of town, so they're looking for targets of opportunity," said Kennewick Corporal Glenn Ball.

And to avoid car prowls? It's a similar idea. Lock up all car doors. Don't leave valuables inside the vehicle.
