CHINOOK PASS, Wash. -- Transportation crews started clearing Chinook Pass earlier than usual this year. They hope to have it open by Memorial Day.

WSDOT said A work typically starts in mid-April on Chinook Pass.

Crews determined it was safe to get going last week. Transportation officials said it was an average offseason for snowfall since it closed last year.

Chinook Pass usually stays open until late November.
