On Saturday, September 15th, an estimated 1,500 volunteers throughout the region will gather to assist with “Day of Service” projects organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in cooperation with various community leaders and organizations.
Clean-up, painting/staining, re-roofing, landscaping, and restoration are a small portion of the many projects that will be taking place in Connell, Grandview, Kennewick, Pasco, Prosser and Richland on Saturday. The projects allow for a wide variety skill levels and age groups to participate. Those interested in volunteering to help with a project should report at a selected work site and, if possible, bring their own work gloves, basic work tools (shovel, rake, hoe, paint brush or roller, etc.).
Most projects will begin at 8:00 a.m. and go until noon. Projects in Prosser and Grandview will begin at 9:00 a.m.
City of Kennewick – 450+ volunteers
Historical Museum-gate repair.
Keewaydin Park-repaint bollards.
Kennewick Senior Center-window replacements.
Fruitland Park-restroom re-roof.
Zintel Canyon Park-stain bridge, repaint surface at playground, repair and reset pavers near sculpture site.
Jay Perry Park-retaining wall repairs/replacement.
Sunset Park-restroom re-roof.
Layton Park-restroom/shelter re-roof.
Lawrence Scott Park-painting of benches and handrails, exercise station rebuild/removal, concession/restroom re-roof and painting, clean landscaping beds and planter boxes, rose garden gazebo re-roof.
Columbia Park-re-do stencil markings as needed and paint curbs at boat launch, Lampson pits pump house, and Audubon shelter, re-roof restroom, rivershore clean-up, re-stain Playground of Dreams, repair entrance kiosk.
Grange Park-surface painting at aquatic playground (Friday/Saturday).
Vancouver Park-surface painting at playground.
Canyon Lakes Park-shelter ceiling staining, restroom door painting.
Inspiration Park-shelter ceiling staining.
Eastgate Park-gazebo ceiling staining.
Hawthorne Park-playground equipment, landscaping.
Underwood Park-restroom painting.
Kenwood Park-shelter re-roof.
Civic Complex-re¬-paint surfacing.
Kennewick Skate Park-repair skate rail, cracks in concrete, and paint equipment.
City of Pasco – 175+ Volunteers
Re-fencing project along Road 84 (1/4-3/8 mile) near Chiawana High School and Tri-Cities Prep (replacement of broken and tagged boards).
City of Richland – 30+ Volunteers
Badger Mountain-work on the drainage basin to include spreading top soil, compost and rock. (Off Keene Road at corner of Melissa and Boleana Streets.)
City of Prosser – 250+ Volunteers
Prosser City Pool-build a retaining wall, landscaping.
Depot Square-repair deck and paint wood surfaces.
E.J. Miller Park-reinstall a swing set.
Hospital-scrape and landscape hill.
Rotary Gazebo-stain gazebo, landscaping and general cleanup.
Whitehead Park-trim trees and general clean-up.
Wine Country Road-general clean-up.
Armory-general cleaning inside building.
Jubilee Ministry (food bank)-paint and resign. (Completed earlier.)
Prosser Rotarians will serve lunch at the City Park for volunteers.
City of Grandview - 75 Volunteers
Dyksra and Euclid Parks-paint interiors of bathrooms, paint park benches, re-bark playgrounds.
Eastside Park, Westside Park, and Country Park (Community Center)-paint bathrooms, re-bark playgrounds, dig out old railroad ties and install new ones.
City of Connell – 300+ Volunteers
Upgrade four baseball diamonds at Pioneer Park, remove grass and weeds from infields, and build a retaining wall.
Already completed as part of the service emphasis this month were clean-up and restoration projects at the Whitman Mission near Walla Walla and projects benefitting the Umatilla School District, Umatilla Senior Center and Umatilla Museum in partnership with the Lions Club, City of Umatilla, Corp of Engineers and the Umatilla Indian Tribe by approximately 500 volunteers.
Projects last year included general clean-up, painting, pruning, installing pathways, creating a dry creek bed, re-roofing, demolition, cement work, tree trimming, window installation, clothing and household give away, and various other restoration and improvement projects throughout Pasco, Kennewick, Richland, Mesa, Weston, and Hermiston and involved approximately 3,000 volunteers.
The mission of Day of Service is to provide service to those in need, unite communities, and build bridges of friendship between peoples of all faith, faith-based organizations, civic leaders, and community organizations. We invite anyone interested to join in the efforts.
