Charges could be filed soon in fatal Prosser crash
PROSSER -- KEPR has new information on a fatal wreck over the weekend that claimed the lives of a Prosser mother and her daughter.

They were hit by a truck that crossed the center line and hit them head on. Action News spoke with the State Patrol Tuesday night. And while no criminal charges have been filed yet, authorities say the case is close to being turned over to the Benton County Prosecutor.

The accident happened on Highway 22, near Richards Road. 14-year-old Alex Islas had just won a soccer match with her team. She and her mom Ilda were on their way home, with her 5-year-old brother in the backseat. He received just minor injuries.

But police say 21-year-old Jeremy Meyer was not paying attention to the road when he crossed over and killed the other two Saturday afternoon. It's still being investigated if he was texting or talking on a cellphone at the time.

Grief counselors have been helping students at Prosser High School, where Alex was a freshman. They all wore her favorite color purple Monday in her honor.

We've also learned a Rosary service will be held for the Islas family and friends at 6:30 Wednesday night at Sacred Heart in Prosser. A funeral mass will follow Thursday morning at 11. A private burial is scheduled for Friday.
