PORTLAND, Ore. - A series of brush fires have closed a section of SR 14 in the state of Washington from Avery to Highway 197, according a spokesman with the parks service.
Fire officials do not yet know the cause of the two fires that were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday.
A 100-acre fire is burning at Horse Thief Campground, which was evacuated briefly before people were allowed back in.
Another fire, near the Avery Recreation Area, is about 250 acres but farther east and closer to the highway.
The highway is expected to be closed through early Friday. Officials have not said exactly when the highway may reopen.
