$5 to make a bomb, thousands to deploy bomb squad

RICHLAND, Wash. -- KEPR is looking into the cost of a major police response like what we saw on Saturday for a pipe bomb scare.

Richland police say the pipe bomb cost about $3 to make. Sending the bomb squad is about $2,500 for every three hours.

Neighbors who heard the pipe bomb being safely detonated were surprised at how much it costs taxpayers.

"It seems like it's a little bit much for just a small operation as it was. They probably could get away with doing it for cheaper," said Bobby Mansfield.

"It's amazing to me it costs a lot of money to get rid of that bang the right way," said Harold Kupfar.

In the interest of full disclosure, that first neighbor we spoke to is a staffer at KEPR.

The man arrested on Saturday was being held on the suspicion of possessing an explosive. Officers say he was high on drugs when he was arrested.
