WEST RICHLAND, Wash. -- Local firefighters have new equipment to help save lives.

Benton County Fire District #4 was able to purchase five new infrared scanners. A federal grant paid the $45,000 price tag.

Firefighters say their old scanners were unreliable. They say the new equipment will help find people trapped in burning buildings faster.

"Truly, the big difference is, as we said, their size. I don't know if you can see the details on the pictures, but on the old cameras, the pictures were nowhere near as clear and detailed," says firefighter Bill Cherwien.

The new scanners are already in use.
