TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- It seems more people were being careless on Christmas Day than on New Year's. Our local law enforcement handed out half a dozen DUI's for New Year's, but nearly 20 between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

State Patrol and Kennewick PD both arrested two people for drunk driving over New Year's Eve, while Pasco and Richland arrested just one a piece. As we told you earlier this week, DUI's are down for the entire year. Troopers credit this to them being more of a presence on the roads.

"When you look at the overall traffic increase and population here in the Tri-Cities, it just becomes more and more important to remove these impaired drivers off these highways," said Lt. Dale Retzlaff.

The DUI squad accounted for 20 percent of DUI's written on state roads in our area this year.
