It Could Pay to be Counted on the Road
RICHLAND-- It pays to be counted at the ballot box, by the census—and on the road.

That's what some traffic counter lines in Richland are all about. You may have seen them laying on a number of spots around town.

Every year, Richland counts how many cars travel on certain streets. If the numbers are up, the city could get federal or state money to make improvements.

Bob Wadlew lives off of Leslie Boulevard and has definitely seen some congestion.

“Leslie's a harder spot to deal with because we go that direction all the time to get out of here. But it's not that bad,” said Wadlew.

The numbers will eventually determine that. Richland expects to have this year’s counts in the Fall.

The traffic counts also help investigate complaints to see if roads are as congested as people sometimes say they are.

Right now there are counters down in four spots around South Richland: near Leslie and Center, near Keene and Duportail, near Keene and Elementary, and near Columbia Park Trail and Fowler.
