Oregon Cigarette Sales Dropping

OREGON - You'd think that with fewer people buying cigarettes in Oregon, Karen Johnson's business would be hurting.

"It's been ok. Sales has actually increased over the last year," said Main Street Market owner Karen Johnson.

The Main Street Market fought the drop in customers by dropper prices - by up to a dollar a pack. Karen figures if she loses a little money on the smokes, she make it up when you buy something else.

"Like everyone in this economy, we're trying to make do. I wanted to increase business and keep people in town. I thought that would be a way we could do that," said Johnson.

Some places in Pendleton haven't been as successful. Circle K tells action news they've lost about a thousand dollars each month in cigarette sales. Down the road, Dave's says the store hasn't been as busy as it used to be.

"We've noticed our cigarette sales are down as they are statewide. We don't like it at all. Those smokers are buying other things as well. We have noticed a drop off," said Dave's owner Clint Walters.

Action News asked them if lowering the price of a pack prices is something they would consider. They didn't feel it would make much of a difference.
