KENNEWICK, WA -- After more than a year, the Cooper Larson Foundation will formally present plans to the community to fix up a baseball field behind Canyon View Elementary. Several community members are planning the project in honor of Cooper Larson, a 4-year-old who died of rare brain cancer two years ago. The group hopes to add a homerun fence, bigger dugouts, bricks around the surrounding area and a bronze statue of Cooper.
To keep neighbors happy, the group won't add a sound system or lights. After the initial plans were proposed, several neighbors spoke against the project by signing petitions and reaching out to several state agencies to stop the plans. The fence is still a sticking point.
"We're kind of excited. we want the truth to get out there about how positive of a project this is for our community, for baseball for kids of all ages who will have the opportunity to play on Cooper's field," Keith Dupuis said, organizer of the Cooper Larson Foundation.
The public meeting is this Thursday, Feb. 18th at 6:30 PM at the KSD Administrative Building Board Room at 524 S. Auburn Street, Kennewick.
Next Wednesday, Feb. 24th the foundation with present the proposal to the Kennewick School Board. The board members make the final decision.
