HERMISTON - The summer school program for Hermiston had a great year in 2009. Drop outs were down and grades went up. But students looking to benefit from this year's summer learning just got bad news.

"We can't offer summer school in 2010," said Hermiston Assistant Superintendent Bryn Browning

The $100,000 that's normally spent on summer school, will now go towards the traditional school year. This change won't just impact a handful of kids.

"This will affect about 650 kids. We were actually hoping to bump up our numbers for summer school 2010," said Browning.

So if you need the summer credits, what do you do now? There are a few options. Students in K-5 will be given summer reading assignments to take home and complete for credit. 6-12 will have to work a little bit harder. For reading credits, there will be a reading program at the Hermiston Library. For other courses like english and math, students can sign up for online courses through Blue Mountain Community College. The district realizes not everyone has these options and hopes this change isn't permanent.

"If we can recover in our general fund budget as the situation hopefully improves in the state, we'll use Title I funds to bring back summer school," said Browning.

Maybe as soon as next year.
